Matariki, the Seven Sisters, and the Journey into a New Year

Before dawn in the Southern Hemisphere, a small cluster of blue-white stars rises in the eastern sky.

Astronomers call it the Pleiades.

In Aotearoa, we know it as Matariki. Scientifically, it is a young family of stars born from the same cloud of cosmic dust. Spiritually and culturally, it has guided people for generations, marking the changing seasons and the beginning of a new cycle.

Matariki invites us to pause.

To remember those who have gone before us.

To acknowledge where we stand today.

And to consider what we wish to nurture in the year ahead.

As we move toward Matariki on 10 July, we are also moving through some interesting numerology.

2026 is a Universal Year 1 — the beginning of a nine-year cycle. New foundations are being laid collectively, even if they are not yet fully visible.

July carries the vibration of the number 8 (7 + 1 = 8).

The 8 is the number of manifestations, leadership, responsibility, and bringing vision into reality.

Matariki therefore arrives at a powerful intersection:

✨ The wisdom of the past (Matariki)

✨ The fresh beginnings of a Universal Year 1

✨ The grounded manifestation energy of an 8 Month

Together they ask:

  • What are you ready to leave behind?

  • What wisdom have you gained from the last chapter?

  • What seeds are you prepared to plant for the future?

Like the stars themselves, some things take time to reveal their light.

Matariki reminds us that every new beginning begins in darkness before it rises.
