When the Numbers Find the Light

August and September have already given us plenty to notice in the sky, with eclipses marking the transition between the two months. But the numbers haven't finished their story yet.

Rather than looking for answers in the sky, perhaps we can simply notice what is happening above us — and then look at the numbers running alongside it.

Because the second half of September 2026 is developing an interesting numerical rhythm.

9 → 1 → 6 → 9 → 1

And there is a story within that sequence.

18 September — 9 meets 1

18/09/2026

1 + 8 + 0 + 9 + 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 28 → 10 → 1

The day 18 also reduces:

1 + 8 = 9

So we begin with 9 sitting within a 1 date.

9 — completion, wisdom, release

1 — beginning, individuality, movement

Two numbers that appear to sit at opposite ends of the numerical cycle are occupying the same day.

Completion → Beginning

Not one stopping before the other can start, but both existing together.

And while the numbers are doing this, there is something quite tangible happening above us. Venus is exceptionally bright in the evening sky, and Mercury is also making one of its better evening appearances of the year from New Zealand.

The numbers give us transition. The astronomy gives us light.

And perhaps the simplest word flow is:

LIGHT

L — illumination

I — insight

G — growth

H — horizon

T — transition

Not because the sky is giving us instructions.

Simply because sometimes what is happening above us gives us a beautiful reason to look up — and what we notice can make us think.

23 September — the 6 at the centre

Then we reach the September equinox, the astronomical beginning of spring here in Aotearoa.

23/09/2026

2 + 3 + 0 + 9 + 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 24 → 6

After the movement between 9 and 1, we arrive at 6.

6 — balance, responsibility, relationship, harmony

Astronomically, the equinox is a crossing point. The Sun crosses the celestial equator as the seasons turn. We often describe it as the moment when light and dark are equal, although day and night are not perfectly equal everywhere. Which makes the number 6 even more interesting. Because balance doesn’t necessarily mean equality.

It can mean adjustment. Finding centre. Responding to movement.

EQUINOX

E — equilibrium

Q — quiet

U — unity

I — integration

N — nature

O — orbit

X — crossing

The last letter may be the most important.

Crossing.

Because the equinox isn’t a destination.

It is a point we move through.

Balance was never meant to be still.

27 September — 9 meets 1 again

Four days later, in the early hours of 27 September, the Moon reaches full here in

New Zealand.

And look at the numbers.

27/09/2026

2 + 7 + 0 + 9 + 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 28 → 10 → 1

While:

2 + 7 = 9

There it is again.

9 → 1

The same numerical relationship we saw on the 18th returns with the Full Moon.

9 — completion

1 — beginning

Release → Renewal

Experience → Initiative

Completion → Creation

The astronomy gives us another physical cycle. The Moon has travelled through its phases and reached full illumination from our viewpoint on Earth. After fullness, the visible light begins to decrease again.

Fullness itself is temporary. Another crossing point. Another cycle continuing.

Follow the numbers

Now step back and look at the sequence:

18 September — 9 → 1

23 September — 6

27 September — 9 → 1

Or simply:

9 → 1 → 6 → 9 → 1

Complete. Begin. Balance. Complete. Begin.

That doesn’t look much like a straight line.

And neither are most transitions.

We finish something.

Something else begins.

We adjust.

We find our balance.

We discover there is something else to complete.

And we move again.

The eclipses may have been the spectacular part of September’s sky.

But perhaps what comes afterwards is equally interesting.

Not because the numbers or the sky is telling us what will happen next.

But because patterns give us another way of noticing where we are now.

And sometimes, when we stop looking for the next big event, we discover the most interesting story has been quietly unfolding in the space between.

9 → 1

Not simply an ending followed by a beginning.

Perhaps a reminder that one is often already contained within the other ✨ ✨ ✨
