Balance Was Never Meant to Be Still

On 23 September 2026 at approximately 12:05 pm NZST, the Sun crosses the celestial equator and astronomical spring begins in the Southern Hemisphere.

For one brief moment, the Earth reaches an astronomical crossing point. The Sun rises almost due east and sets almost due west, while both hemispheres receive nearly equal amounts of light.

Nearly equal—but not perfectly equal.

Despite its name coming from the Latin words for “equal night,” the equinox does not divide light and darkness into two exact halves. The Sun is not a single point in the sky, and Earth’s atmosphere bends its light. Here in Canterbury, we will receive approximately nine minutes more daylight than darkness.

Perhaps that is the first lesson of this equinox:

Balance does not always mean equal.

23/09/2026

2 + 3 + 0 + 9 + 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 24 → 6

The day begins with 23/5.

The 5 is movement, change, freedom and adjustment. It rarely asks us to remain exactly where we are. It understands that life moves, circumstances change and what once held us steady may eventually need to be reconsidered.

The full date moves to 24/6.

The 6 seeks harmony, care, responsibility, relationships and a sense of belonging. It asks us to consider what we are nurturing and whether the structures around us still support the people we are becoming.

Together, the 5 and 6 tell an interesting story.

Change does not have to destroy harmony. Sometimes change is how harmony is restored.

The time adds another number: 12:05

1 + 2 + 0 + 5 = 8

The 8 carries the shape of balance within it—two circles meeting at a central point. Turn it on its side and it becomes the symbol of infinity: a continuous movement rather than a fixed position.

The 8 also speaks of cause and effect, responsibility and the relationship between the choices we make and the consequences that follow. It reminds us that balance is not something we achieve once and then possess forever. It is something we participate in.

Even the sky’s numerical pattern adds another layer.

At the moment of the equinox, the Sun is shown at 29°59′ Virgo, poised at the very edge of Libra.

The 29 reduces to 11:

2 + 9 = 11

The number 11 heightens awareness. It illuminates what we may already sense but have not yet fully acknowledged. It is the narrow space between what has been and what comes next—the threshold where something becomes too clear to unknow.

And 29 appears repeatedly throughout the chart.

The Sun is at 29 degrees.

Chiron is at 29 degrees.

The lunar nodes are also at 29 degrees.

This repeating 29/11 pattern does not feel quiet. It suggests a moment of heightened recognition: several parts of the story arriving at a threshold together.

It does not present balance as the absence of disagreement, discomfort or change. It suggests that genuine balance may require an honest conversation, a clearer boundary, a different distribution of responsibility or the courage to admit that an old arrangement no longer works.

The science tells us something similar. The equinox is not a day on which light and darkness become equal and remain that way. It is a crossing point. From here, the days continue to lengthen throughout the Southern Hemisphere until the December solstice.

The balance is already moving.

Perhaps we were never meant to hold every part of life in perfect proportion. Some seasons ask more of us. Some relationships require recalibration. Sometimes rest needs to outweigh productivity, receiving must replace giving, or our own needs must finally be placed back into the equation.

The 23/5 allows movement.

The 24/6 asks what we are caring for.

The 29/11 brings awareness.

This equinox may not be asking us to create a perfectly balanced life. It may simply be asking us to notice where the light has shifted—and to move with enough awareness that we do not lose ourselves trying to keep everything still.

Because balance was never meant to be still.

It was always meant to respond.
