The Space Between ….
21 August 2026
Lately I’ve found myself thinking about the space between things.
We tend to notice beginnings and endings because they are easy to identify.
We remember when something started, when a decision was made, when something changed, or when we finally understood what had been sitting in front of us.
But life rarely moves neatly from one defined moment to another. Most of it happens somewhere in between.
I started thinking about this while looking at the daily numerology patterns I’ve been sharing recently. I always calculate the full date before reducing it to its final vibration, but increasingly I’ve become interested in what happens when we don’t rush straight to that final number.
Take 26 → 8. Within the 26 I read a movement of:
2 — Connect → 6 — Nurture → 8 — Empower
The following day brought 27 → 9:
2 — Connect → 7 — Reflect → 9 — Release
Then came 28 → 10 → 1:
2 — Connect → 8 — Empower → 1 — Begin
And today we have 21 → 3:
2 — Connect → 1 — Begin → 3 — Express
Seen individually, they are simply daily number patterns. Put beside one another, however, they begin to tell a much more interesting story.
We connect with something before we necessarily understand what it means. We nurture some things and reflect on others. We recognise what we may be ready to release. Something shifts, a beginning becomes possible and eventually what has been forming internally may be ready to find expression.
That made me wonder whether the most interesting part of a number isn’t always where it finishes.
Perhaps there is a story in how it gets there.
Life happens in the middle
The same thing happens in ordinary life.
A conversation can stay with us long after it has finished. An idea keeps returning when we thought we had dismissed it. Something we’ve happily accepted for years suddenly feels different, although we can’t quite explain why.
Usually we want to understand these things quickly. We like answers. If something feels different, we want to know what changed. If an idea appears, we want to know where it is going. If we recognise a pattern, we want to know what we are supposed to do with it.
But I’ve begun to wonder whether we’re sometimes too quick to fill that space.
There can be value in allowing an observation to remain an observation for a while. We can notice what repeats, what disappears, what becomes clearer and what turns out to have been nothing more than a passing thought.
That isn’t necessarily indecision. Sometimes it is simply giving understanding enough time to form.
Why the space between eclipses caught my attention
There’s another reason this idea feels particularly timely.
We are currently between two eclipses. The Solar Eclipse occurred globally on 12 August, which was 13 August here in New Zealand, and the next is a Lunar Eclipse on 28 August.
The Solar Eclipse wasn’t visible from New Zealand. The Lunar Eclipse is a partial eclipse globally, although here in Canterbury the main partial phase will happen while the Moon is still below the horizon. By the time the Moon rises, we will be able to see only the remaining penumbral phase.
I mention that because I think it’s important to distinguish what is actually happening astronomically from the meaning we may choose to explore through astrology or other modalities.
What caught my attention wasn’t whether we could physically see either eclipse.
It was the fact that we are quite literally in the space between two clearly identifiable astronomical events.
We notice events because they have dates, times and names. Yet all the ordinary days between them don’t cease to matter simply because they don’t have an astronomical headline attached to them.
That struck me as remarkably similar to the numbers.
We notice the beginning. We notice the outcome.
But what about everything that happens in between?
Perhaps that’s where the pattern becomes visible
This is one of the reasons I continue to enjoy working with numerology and, alongside it, observing astrology and astronomy. I don’t need these modalities to provide instructions for life. For me, they are different ways of observing patterns and asking questions.
A number can make me stop and consider something I might otherwise have passed over. Something happening in the sky can make me curious enough to look more closely. Neither removes choice, and neither needs to provide an answer.
Because ultimately, life is the part that matters.
Sometimes a pattern resonates immediately. Sometimes it makes sense much later. Sometimes it doesn’t resonate at all, and that can be useful information too.
Perhaps the important thing is simply remaining curious enough to notice.
So while we’re in this literal space between two eclipses, I’m less interested in asking
“What is going to happen?” than I am in noticing what is already happening in the ordinary days between them.
What conversations stay with us? What ideas keep returning? What feels different from a week ago? What are we beginning to understand that we couldn’t yet put into words?
We don’t necessarily have to do anything with those observations immediately. The space between doesn’t have to be hurried through simply because we haven’t yet reached an answer.
And back to the numbers…
Perhaps this is why those recent number flows have stayed with me.
If I step back from the individual dates and look at the words themselves, there is a larger movement running through them:
Connect → Nurture → Empower
Connect → Reflect → Release
Connect → Empower → Begin
Connect → Begin → Express
And there is one word that keeps appearing at the beginning.
Connect.
Perhaps that is where the space between begins.
Before we release, begin, express or decide what something means, perhaps we first need to connect with what is actually happening.
To notice.
To listen.
To allow something to sit long enough for us to recognise whether it matters.
And only then does the next part of the flow begin to reveal itself.
So perhaps the question isn’t always “What next?”
Perhaps it is simply:
What am I noticing now?
Because the space between isn’t necessarily empty. It may be where experience settles, where the pieces rearrange and where something we couldn’t see clearly before slowly begins to take shape.
Just like the numbers, perhaps we don’t always need to rush to the final vibration.
There may be a story in how we get there.
Finding the story between the numbers.
