Following the Story Through Mythology, Numerology and Tarot

An Anam Cara Reflection

As Mercury begins to move direct once again, I found myself asking a simple question.

What is actually happening during this transition?

Like many people, I'd heard the familiar conversations about delays, technology and communication during Mercury retrograde. While those experiences can certainly happen, this year my curiosity took me in a different direction.

Rather than asking what Mercury retrograde might disrupt, I found myself wondering what Mercury has been trying to teach us all along.

That question led me beyond astrology and into mythology, numerology and Tarot.

What I discovered wasn't another prediction.

It was a recurring story told through different symbolic traditions.

A story that invites us to move from awareness, to understanding, and ultimately to embodiment.

Have you ever had one of those moments where everything suddenly becomes clear?

Perhaps you've been wrestling with a decision for weeks.

Then, almost without warning, the fog lifts.

The answer doesn't arrive because someone tells you what to do.

It arrives because something within you finally notices what has been there all along.

That feeling has made me think differently about Mercury retrograde.

Perhaps Mercury retrograde isn't really about disruption.

Perhaps it's about awareness.

I've started thinking about Mercury's two phases like this.

Mercury moving direct brings our attention to life.

We become busy, curious, communicative and engaged with what's happening around us.

Mercury retrograde brings awareness.

It asks us to slow down long enough to recognise what our busy minds may have overlooked.

That distinction feels important.

Attention notices.

Awareness understands.

Perhaps that is where the real journey begins.

The Journey of the Messenger

If Mercury is inviting us into greater awareness, perhaps it helps to understand why Mercury has always been known as the Messenger.

In mythology, Hermes (Mercury) moved freely between heaven and earth, carrying messages between worlds.

Symbolically, that image has always fascinated me.

Perhaps we experience something similar ourselves.

During Mercury retrograde, we seem to travel between the conscious and unconscious parts of our own lives.

Ideas we've dismissed suddenly make sense.

Old conversations return with new meaning.

Patterns we've been living begin to reveal themselves.

It's less about going backwards than it is about revisiting something with fresh eyes.

Sometimes we need to return before we can truly move forward.

The Number Five

As I reflected on that journey, I couldn't help noticing another connection.

The symbolism of Mercury doesn't end with mythology.

As a numerologist, I've always known that Mercury has long been associated with the vibration of the number 5.

Five speaks of communication, curiosity, adaptability, learning and freedom.

It encourages movement—not simply physical movement, but movement of the mind.

When Mercury appears to slow in the sky, perhaps the energy of the 5 slows with it.

Not to stop us.

But to encourage us to ask better questions.

To notice where our thinking has become automatic.

To become more conscious of the stories we tell ourselves.

Then another thought occurred to me.

Within the numerology grid, the number 5 occupies a unique position.

It sits at the very center of the Soul Plane.

Every direction passes through it.

Every movement pauses there before continuing its journey.

Perhaps this is why Mercury has always been recognised as the Messenger.

Its role isn't simply to carry information.

It helps us understand it.

When Mercury appears to slow in the sky, perhaps we are being invited to slow at the center as well.

Not to stop moving.

But to pause long enough to recognise what has been trying to reach our awareness all along.

The Magician

The same story appears once again in another symbolic tradition.

In the Tarot, Mercury is often associated with The Magician.

One hand points towards the heavens.

The other points towards the earth.

It is a beautiful image.

For me, The Magician doesn't simply represent the power to create.

He represents the journey of an idea.

An insight is received.

It is understood.

Then it is brought into the world through words, choices and action.

Ideas become action.

Wisdom becomes experience.

Insight becomes something we can live.

Perhaps that is the real work of Mercury.

To receive the message.

To understand the message.

Then to carry it into everyday life.

As Mercury Moves Forward

As Mercury gradually resumes direct motion, perhaps this is the time to gather what these past weeks have been trying to teach us.

Write down the ideas that keep returning.

Have the conversation you've been postponing.

Send the email.

Make the phone call.

Trust the clarity that has slowly emerged.

Because maybe Mercury retrograde was never trying to confuse us.

Maybe it was simply inviting us to become more aware.

And awareness, once recognised, has a remarkable way of changing the journey ahead.

A Final Reflection

This is one of the reasons I enjoy studying patterns.

Mercury tells the story through movement.

Mythology tells it through the Messenger.

Numerology tells it through the center of the Soul Plane.

The Tarot tells it through The Magician.

Different traditions.

Different symbols.

Yet each seems to point towards the same human journey.

Awareness (7)

↓

Understanding (5)

Embodiment (1)

Not as rules.

Not as predictions.

But as symbols that encourage us to pause, reflect and understand ourselves a little more deeply.

Perhaps the greatest gift Mercury offers isn't perfect communication.

Perhaps it's the awareness that allows our words—and our lives—to become more intentional.

As Mercury begins its direct journey once more, perhaps we are invited to do the same.

To move forward with greater awareness.

Greater understanding.

And the willingness to embody what we've learned.

My reflections as Mercury turns direct.
